A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died following an encounter with a 21-year-old woman at a hotel in Ekpoma.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at a hotel located in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Uwuigbe was said to have checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, after which he reportedly died shortly after their encounter.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, disclosing that three persons had been arrested in connection with the lecturer’s death.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report concerning the incident on October 5, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m.
According to her, the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
Ikoedem explained that Uwuigbe later sent the woman out to purchase water for him.
She said that upon her return to the hotel room, the woman found the lecturer lying dead.
Following the report, the hotel owner, hotel manager and the 21-year-old woman were taken into police custody as investigations commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the mortuary of Oriaifo Memorial Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Ade Aladenika, confirmed that the deceased was a member of the university’s staff.
However, Aladenika stressed that the incident did not occur on the university campus and described the circumstances surrounding it as part of the lecturer’s private life.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
The police investigation is expected to establish the actual circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death, while the three persons arrested remain in custody as the investigation continues.
