The Onibaasi of Baasi land, His Highness Oba Sunday Azeez Babatunde Asunmo, has assured settlers and residents of Baasi land of adequate security and protection of their lives and property following a recent kidnapping attempt that claimed the life of a Gbari settler.
The monarch gave the assurance at a peace meeting held today to commiserate with members of the Gbari community over the death of their loved one during a kidnap attempt that occurred on Sunday night.
Addressing leaders of the Gbari settlers, Oba Sunday Azeez said the incident did not portray Baasi as the peaceful community it is known to be, stressing the need for proactive measures to protect the lives and property of residents and other inhabitants of the domain.
He said steps were already being taken in collaboration with the Area Commander in Saki to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that those responsible for the “dastardly act” are identified and brought to justice.
While reassuring the settlers that adequate security would be provided across Baasi, the monarch urged residents to remain security-conscious and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the police and other relevant security agencies.
Oba Asunmo declared that the perpetrators of the attack would not escape justice, assuring the people that efforts were being made to ensure that those behind the incident were brought to book.
The monarch also used the occasion to assure the Gbari settlers of government support, highlighting measures being taken by the administration of Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to make the state safe and conducive for all residents, irrespective of their background.
According to him, the state government under Governor Makinde has established a police post in Baasi town as part of efforts to prevent crime and criminality and strengthen security within the community.
He stressed that Governor Makinde prioritises the welfare and security of the people of Oyo State and has no tolerance for criminal activities or unruly behaviour. He noted that this commitment was also reflected in the state government’s desire to procure an aircraft for surveillance operations as part of measures to enhance security across the state.
Oba Sunday Azeez prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased and urged members of the Gbari community to accept the tragedy as an act of God.
He also prayed for God to grant the bereaved family the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The peace meeting was attended by the Baasi Community Chairman, Prince Tajudeen Ashafa; palace chiefs; and representatives of the Gbari settlers.
