Tensions boiled over in the Oyo State capital on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a massive crowd of demonstrators, led by popular social commentator and human rights activist Vincent Otse, universally known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), stormed the private residence of Governor Seyi Makinde in Ikolaba, Ibadan.
The high-energy, peaceful demonstration was organised to demand the immediate, unconditional release of the 39 pupils and remaining schoolteachers who were violently abducted by terrorists from the Oriire Local Government Area of the state exactly one month ago, on May 15.

The protest commenced in the early morning hours at the bustling Iwo Road interchange, a major transport hub in Ibadan. Mobilized under VDM’s massive online and grassroots influence, a large crowd of youths, civil society groups, market women, and frustrated residents quickly swelled the ranks.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with bold inscriptions such as “Bring Back Our Children,” “47 Abducted, Scared and Alone,” and “Oyo State Must Not Become the Pacesetter of Banditry,” the demonstrators marched peacefully through major arterial roads, entirely disrupting vehicular traffic across the metropolitan center.
Security remained incredibly tight throughout the march. Operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the state’s Amotekun Corps, and independent human rights monitors established a loose perimeter around the processing crowd to prevent criminal elements from hijacking the peaceful assembly. By mid-afternoon, the procession successfully converged outside the heavily guarded gates of Governor Makinde’s private residence in Ikolaba.
In a highly unusual move that broke standard security protocols, Governor Seyi Makinde stepped outside his private compound to personally face and address the surging crowd.
Visibly emotional but firm, the Governor commended the youths for their peaceful conduct and validated their deep frustrations over the prolonged hostage crisis. He reassured the crowd that the state government, in coordination with specialized federal forces deployed by President Bola Tinubu, has refused to sleep since the school breach occurred.
“Those children and their teachers will be brought back,” Governor Makinde declared directly to VDM and the gathered protesters. “Let me make it very clear to the entire world: Oyo State is not Chibok, and it will never become Chibok. We have committed significant administrative resources and deployed all available tactical efforts to ensure their rescue.”
The Governor added that local hunters, the military, and the police have continued to make deep, unseen sacrifices in the ongoing forest operations, vowing that his administration will not relent until every single hostage is safely reunited with their families.
The Ibadan march spearheaded by VeryDarkMan marks a significant escalation in public discontent over regional insecurity. The demonstration follows weeks of mounting friction in the state, including an ongoing indefinite strike action by the Oyo State branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and a sweeping solidarity closure of private schools to protest the brutal killing of schoolteacher Michael Oyedokun during the initial raid.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, VDM emphasized that citizens will no longer sit idly by while educational facilities are turned into operational hunting grounds for bandit syndicates. He called on the federal government to provide the joint military-vigilante task force combing the northern forests of Oyo State with advanced aerial surveillance and thermal imagery technology to pinpoint the kidnappers’ camps and bring the horrific saga to a swift, definitive end.
