The African Democratic Congress has suspended the collation of results from its ongoing presidential primary election ahead of the 2027 general election.
Chairman of the ADC Presidential Primary Election Committee, Ikechi Emenike, announced the postponement late Tuesday, explaining that the decision was taken to allow Muslim members of the party observe and celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir festival.
According to Emenike, the collation of results from the remaining states will now resume by 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Abuja.
He further disclosed that several returning officers experienced flight delays while travelling to the Federal Capital Territory for the final collation exercise.
Before the suspension, results from 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory had already been announced, while collation from the remaining states was still pending.
The ADC presidential primary has continued to attract national attention, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen emerging as the leading contenders in the race.
The exercise has, however, been overshadowed by controversy following allegations of irregularities and vote rigging raised by Hayatu-Deen, as well as concerns expressed by Amaechi’s camp over the credibility of the primary process.
The postponement of the result collation is expected to further heighten political tension within the party as stakeholders await the continuation and eventual conclusion of the exercise.
