BARRISTER: THE MUKADAM WHO TURNED HAJJ INTO A SPIRITUAL MUSICAL JOURNEY BY FADHEELAT DIKKO OREOLUWA

As Muslim faithful across the world prepare for another sacred pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, the voice of Sikiru Ayinde Barrister continues to echo like a spiritual guide from another generation. Through Mecca Special A & B Vol. 3, Barrister not only entertained; he transformed Fuji music into Islamic documentation, prayer, preaching, and historical narration.

Right from the opening of the album, his intention was clear:

“Gbogbo ẹyin Imale ẹ bá jẹ́ ká sin ọlọ́run, ìrún lẹsin Imale, wákàtí márùn ní ń gbéní d’alijọnna…”

He reminded Muslims that Islam is rooted in prayer, discipline, and devotion to Allah. At a time when many musicians focused only on worldly enjoyment, Barrister boldly used music to call people back to faith.

One of the reasons Barrister proudly referred to himself as Mukadam was because he saw himself beyond ordinary entertainment. In Yoruba Islamic understanding, a Mukadam is someone entrusted with spiritual guidance and religious responsibility. Barrister’s music reflected this deeply. He openly condemned immoral behavior, drunkenness, and spiritual carelessness.

“Kó mútí m’ẹmu, kò ní kí a máa ṣẹsin…”

Those were not the words of a musician chasing trends. They were the words of a man who believed Fuji music could become a vehicle for moral instruction and da’wah.

What made Barry Wonder different was his extraordinary ability to combine Islamic knowledge with storytelling. Listening to Mecca Special feels like travelling physically with the pilgrims themselves. He mentioned Jeddah, Mina, Muzdalifah, Arafat, Medina, and the Kaaba with emotional detail and spiritual excitement.

“Mó garáfà, mó dé mínà, mó dé mustalifa, mó dé ìlú Mẹdina…”

That line alone carried listeners across the holy land spiritually. Barrister narrated Hajj not like a tourist, but like a devoted pilgrim overwhelmed by the sacred atmosphere.

His description of arriving in Mecca remains one of the most emotional moments in Fuji Islamic music. As pilgrims entered the holy city, Barrister captured the spiritual chant that shakes the hearts of Muslims worldwide:

    “Allahumọ labaik, mó jẹ́ ìpè ẹ Olúwa…”

    Then he continued:

    “Lá ṣẹ́ríkàlàká labaik…”

Those lyrics were not ordinary chants. They reflected the Talbiyah recited by pilgrims during Hajj. Barrister carefully blended Islamic rituals with indigenous Yoruba expression in a way that felt natural, educational, and spiritually uplifting.

Another unique quality of Barrister was his powerful memory and attention to detail. He mentioned countless names of pilgrims, families, travel organizers, and companions throughout the journey. In today’s world, many artists struggle to construct meaningful narratives, but Barrister turned real-life experiences into oral historical archives.

“Sunmuratu ni ẹ bá lọ… wọn lakíkanjú lórí àwọn èérò tó sanwo sọ́dọ̀ wọn…”

Through such lines, he even documented the Hajj travel arrangements and experiences of that era, preserving memories many families still cherish today.

Barrister also constantly reminded listeners about the temporary nature of life and the importance of preparing for the hereafter. He warned against pride and worldly distraction while encouraging Muslims to remain steadfast in worship.

    “Ẹnì tó náwó sí tọlọ́run pẹ̀lú t’anọbi, ó dàlé t’Olúwa ọba…”

That message remains relevant today, especially during Hajj season when Muslims seek forgiveness, mercy, and spiritual renewal.

What truly separated Sikiru Ayinde Barrister from many musicians was balance. He praised successful people and celebrated his supporters, yet he always returned listeners to Allah. He could move from prayer to praise-singing, from Islamic history to social commentary, without losing direction.

Even in moments of celebration, spirituality remained at the center:

“Ọba Olúwa má dá yín rú… Ọba tó dá yín pọ̀ má yà yín…”

That was the soul of Barrister — prayer, humanity, rhythm, and wisdom combined together.

As another Hajj season unfolds, Barrister’s Mecca Special albums remain more than old Fuji records. They are spiritual journals, Islamic cultural archives, and reminders of a time when music carried lessons, values, and deep religious consciousness.

May Allah forgive the shortcomings of Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, accept his good deeds, illuminate his grave, and reward him for using his talent to promote faith, history, and moral consciousness.

“Ọba Olúwa má fi ikú yà wá…”

    Ameen.
