IBADAN, OYO STATE — The 2027 governorship contest in Oyo State has taken a new turn as Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, representing Oyo South Senatorial District, formally declared his ambition to lead the state, setting out a broad agenda focused on inclusive governance, security, and economic transformation.

The declaration marks a significant development within the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the lawmaker presenting what he described as a vision for a “New Oyo” anchored on people-centred policies and grassroots engagement.

At the unveiling of his ambition, Alli stressed that his administration would prioritise inclusiveness, ensuring that all parts of the state benefit from governance. Drawing from his experience in the Senate, he noted that he possesses a deep understanding of the challenges confronting the state’s 33 local government areas.

He explained that his goal is to build a system where governance is felt across all communities, regardless of political affiliation or geographic location, adding that development must cut across agrarian zones such as Oke-Ogun as well as urban centres like Ibadan and Ogbomoso.

Security featured prominently in his blueprint, as the senator underscored the need for a safer environment to drive growth and attract investment. He pledged to deploy modern security strategies aimed at protecting farmers, traders, and residents throughout the state.

On the economic front, Alli outlined plans for an agricultural transformation, leveraging his role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges to position Oyo State as a leading food-producing hub. He also promised to improve infrastructure, particularly road networks that connect rural producers with urban markets.

In addition, he highlighted youth and women empowerment as key priorities, with proposals to support entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses as part of efforts to reduce unemployment.

Alli, a former Secretary to the State Government and former Chief of Staff, enters the race with extensive administrative experience, a factor analysts believe could strengthen the APC’s position ahead of the elections. His aspiration is also seen as part of the party’s strategy to present a candidate with both governance experience and grassroots appeal.

With the current administration nearing the end of its tenure, Alli’s “inclusive development” message is expected to shape the APC’s campaign narrative. Observers note that his ability to unify party stakeholders will play a crucial role as the party prepares for its primaries.

Following his declaration, the senator is expected to embark on consultations across the state to consolidate support and build momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
