2027 Coalition Talks Gather Momentum as PDP Delegation Meets ADC Leaders Over ‘Threat to Democracy’

Strong indications of a possible opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections emerged on Wednesday as a high-powered delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) paid a solidarity visit to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what both parties described as coordinated political attacks against opposition groups nationwide.

The PDP delegation said the visit was necessitated by growing concerns over pressures faced by opposition parties, noting that the challenges currently confronting the ADC reflect similar experiences endured by the PDP in recent times.

The meeting brought together an array of influential political figures from both parties, a development widely interpreted as a signal of a potential united opposition front ahead of the next general elections.

Leading the PDP delegation were Seyi Makinde, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Adolphus Wabara, Jerry Gana, Babangida Aliyu, Taofeek Arapaja, Inna Ciroma, Ishaya Bamayi, Fred Agbedi, and Ini Ememobong, the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

On the ADC side, the PDP team was received by a formidable line-up including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Kashim Imam, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Tunde Ogbeha, Peter Obi, Liyel Imoke, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Bolaji Abdullahi.

During the engagement, the PDP delegation stressed the need for heightened vigilance against actions capable of undermining democratic principles and political plurality. The party expressed concern over what it described as the “delisting” and administrative challenges faced by the ADC, warning that such developments could be part of broader efforts to weaken opposition voices in the country.

Responding, ADC leaders expressed appreciation for the solidarity visit, reiterating that Nigeria’s democracy is facing what they termed an “existential threat,” marked by deliberate attempts to diminish the strength of major opposition parties.

Both parties agreed on the need for sustained engagement, emphasizing that safeguarding democratic institutions and values requires collective responsibility beyond partisan interests.

The convergence of prominent political figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi under the ADC platform to receive the PDP delegation has intensified speculation about the emergence of a broad-based opposition coalition, potentially forming a formidable “Third Force” to challenge the status quo in 2027.

The statement on the visit was signed by Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
