Oyo Crowns Three Obas in Absentia, Government Insists Process Followed Law

The Seyi Makinde administration has reaffirmed that the coronation of three Ibadan high chiefs as beaded-crown Obas remains legally binding, despite their absence at the official ceremony held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan.

Governor Makinde, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, performed the formal crowning of Senator Sarafadeen Alli, Oyekola Babalola (SAN), and High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin. He stressed that due process was strictly followed, making the elevation valid regardless of their physical absence.

The government explained that the exercise was conducted in line with Section 20 (1) and (4) of the Chiefs Law, Cap 28, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000. Under the new arrangement, Oba Adewoyin was elevated to Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Babalola (SAN) to Ekarun Olubadan, while Oba Alli assumed the position of Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland.

Makinde emphasised that strict adherence to legal provisions was necessary to maintain continuity and prevent any vacuum within Ibadan’s well-structured traditional system.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, described the ceremony as more than a routine event, noting that it reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving Ibadan’s cultural heritage.

Royal backing was also evident as the Olubadan of Ibadanland was represented at the event by the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.

The development has also taken on a political dimension, particularly with the inclusion of Oba Sarafadeen Alli, who is reportedly being considered by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a potential gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State.

However, the ceremony drew widespread attention due to the conspicuous absence of the newly installed Obas, raising questions among observers and giving the event an unusual tone for what is typically a symbolic and culturally rich occasion.

Despite this, the event was attended by top government officials and traditional rulers from across the state, underscoring its significance within both the cultural and political landscape of Oyo State.
