The Oke-Ogun region and Nigeria’s media community have been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran journalist and media pioneer, Chief Abiola Okikiola, who passed away at the age of 79.
His transition was announced by the Abiola family in a statement released early Thursday morning, confirming that he died peacefully in the early hours of April 2, 2026.
Widely acknowledged as a transformative figure in grassroots journalism, the late Chief Okikiola was a veteran journalist who retired from NTA Ibadan and was also the founder of Oke Ogun News, a platform through which he brought professional reporting closer to rural communities. His work helped bridge the gap between underserved local populations and centres of authority, earning him recognition as a pioneer who reshaped the role of the media at the grassroots level.
Described by colleagues and community leaders as a trailblazer, he was credited not only with reporting events but also with empowering citizens through information and advocacy. According to the family, his contributions left a lasting mark on society, as he championed community awareness and encouraged people to demand their constitutional rights.

While expressing deep sorrow, the family stated their acceptance of the will of the Almighty, as prayers continue for those he left behind. The traditional expression, “Odun a jina si ara” (may such a loss be far from us again), has echoed across the community.
