The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has suffered another setback with the resignation of a prominent party chieftain, Hon. Wale Ajani, who blamed his decision on uncertainty and the absence of internal democracy within the party.
Ajani announced his exit in a letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman, Ward 6, Ona Ara Local Government, stating that his resignation takes effect from January 10, 2026. In the letter, the former Director General of Oyo State Liaison, Lagos and Abuja during Governor Seyi Makinde’s first term, thanked party leaders and members for the support he enjoyed over the years.
He explained that although the decision was difficult, the prevailing situation in the party, including the existence of factions and the use of caretaker committees, made his continued stay untenable.
His resignation comes at a time when the PDP is grappling with internal challenges in Oyo State, marked by reports of defections and deepening disagreements. In December 2025, the party constituted a Caretaker Committee for the state, headed by Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso, to manage its affairs.
Ajani’s exit is widely regarded as a major loss to the PDP, given his influence and standing in Oyo State politics. While he did not clearly state his next political move, he hinted at plans to prepare for a higher level of political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP has continued to battle internal strife, with factions reportedly operating in several states, including Oyo. The party’s national leadership has been making efforts to address the conflicts and reinforce party structures.
Ajani’s resignation adds to a growing list of high-profile departures from the PDP. Earlier, other notable members, including a chieftain from Atiba Local Government, left the party for other platforms, citing similar concerns.
As the PDP works to steady itself amid these developments, Ajani’s departure underscores the urgent need for the party to confront its internal issues and rebuild unity among its members.
