A 300-level student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Muslimat Ifedolapo Alade, has taken her advocacy for healthy living to the campus, urging fellow students to adopt better eating habits while supporting some with food items.

Alade, a student of Nutrition and Dietetics, made the call during the flag-off of her campus-based project, Healthy Food for All, held within the university community. She expressed concern over the growing dependence of students on junk food, caffeine, and sugary drinks, particularly during examination periods, warning that such habits pose long-term health risks.

According to her, many undergraduates rely on quick snacks and energy drinks to stay awake for studies, neglecting healthier options that can provide sustained energy without adverse effects. She noted that fruits and balanced, nutrient-rich meals remain safer and more effective for maintaining alertness, academic performance, and overall wellbeing.

The nutrition student explained that her passion for the campaign was inspired by the unhealthy eating patterns of a close friend, which she believed reflected a broader trend among young people on campus. She added that proper nutrition enhances brain function, physical health, and personal confidence.

Alade said the Healthy Food for All initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2 on Zero Hunger and Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being.

As part of the project, she and members of her team distributed food items to selected students on campus and within the host community to assist those with limited access to adequate meals.

Speaking on the challenges encountered, Alade disclosed that securing sponsorship for the initiative was difficult, but she expressed appreciation to her family and friends for providing the financial and moral support that made the project possible.

She noted that the initiative is ongoing and appealed to individuals and organisations interested in youth health and wellness to partner with or support the project to expand its reach.
