Ibadan Airport Set for Reopening as Makinde Moves to Honour Olubadan-Designate Ladoja

The Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Alakia, Ibadan, which has been undergoing major upgrades to attain international status, is on course to reopen for operations as early as Monday, ahead of the coronation of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

According to sources quoted by the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) officials completed their final inspection of the airport facilities on Thursday, paving the way for certification. One of the sources revealed that Governor Seyi Makinde has already written a letter indicating that the reopening is tied to the upcoming coronation of Oba Ladoja, to enable dignitaries outside the South West to land directly in Ibadan. The move also comes in view of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention scheduled for November in the Oyo State capital.

The coronation, fixed for September 26, is expected to attract a high-profile turnout, given Oba Ladoja’s distinguished career as a former governor of Oyo State and a senator. Sources disclosed that he had reached out to his former colleagues from the botched Third Republic, including the then Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu.

Notably, President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi have all personally spoken to Ladoja, with Obi expected to pay him a courtesy visit before the ceremony.

In a letter to the airport contractor, Governor Makinde confirmed that the upgrade project had achieved “a major milestone,” highlighting the completion of the runway.

“The upgraded runway is now complete, bringing us closer to reopening the airport. Other works are ongoing to ensure it meets the highest standards for local and international operations, but I am pleased to say that local flights will resume soon just in time for the Olubadan coronation,” Makinde wrote.

He described the reopening as a symbolic way to honour the Olubadan-designate, adding: “As you may know, the coronation of my father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, will be held on 26 September 2025. I am looking forward to carrying out this assignment and honouring him in this way. Great things are indeed happening in Oyo State.”

Governors from across the South West and political leaders nationwide are expected to grace the coronation ceremony.
