The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially acknowledged a letter from Governor Seyi Makinde, informing lawmakers of his plan to embark on a one-month vacation beginning Thursday, August 29, 2025, and ending Monday, September 29, 2025.
The correspondence, read during Tuesday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, was in line with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which mandates a governor to formally notify the legislature before proceeding on leave.
In his letter, Governor Makinde stated that he would temporarily transfer the reins of government to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who is expected to act as governor for the duration of the vacation.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as Acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September 2025,” the governor’s message read in part.
Responding, the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, acknowledged receipt of the communication and assured that the Assembly would provide full support to ensure a seamless transition of responsibilities in the governor’s absence. He emphasised the legislature’s commitment to upholding constitutional provisions and ensuring continuity of governance in the state.
With the governor’s leave formally communicated and endorsed by the Assembly, Barrister Bayo Lawal will assume full executive powers as Acting Governor from August 29 until Makinde’s return on September 29.
Meanwhile, the House of Assembly has adjourned its next plenary sitting to September 16, 2025.
