Atiku Resigns from PDP, Cites Departure from Founding Principles

Former Vice President of Nigeria and founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership from the party, citing irreconcilable differences and a shift from the party’s original vision.

In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP leadership, Atiku expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunities he had during his time in the party, including serving as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and twice emerging as the party’s presidential candidate.

“It is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

The former Vice President described his departure as a painful but necessary step, noting that the values he once championed within the PDP have become increasingly difficult to uphold in its present form.

“I resign with a heavy heart, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he added.

Atiku wished the party and its leadership well in their future endeavours and thanked them for the support he received during his decades-long political journey within the party.

The letter was acknowledged as received in Hammadama, Adamawa State, Atiku’s political base.

His resignation is expected to significantly impact Nigeria’s political landscape, especially as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
