SOKOTO, July 13, 2025 — The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In a statement issued through his media team, the Sultan described the death of the revered monarch as a great loss not only to the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State but also to the Nigerian Muslim community and the nation at large.

“His leadership has been pivotal not only in his local community but also across the broader spectrum of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria,” the Sultan noted.

Oba Adetona, who was the President General of the Ogun State Muslim Council, was lauded by the Sultan for his lifetime of service, wisdom, and dedication to faith and community. The statement noted that the traditional ruler’s contributions extended far beyond the borders of Ijebu, impacting religious harmony and traditional leadership across Nigeria.

“Our consolation lies in the fact that the Awujale lived a fulfilled life, dedicated to the service of Almighty Allah, his people, and the entire Nigerian Muslim community,” the Sultan stated. “His wisdom and guidance will be sorely missed by us, the traditional rulers of Nigeria.”

The Sultan extended heartfelt condolences to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun State Government, the Awujale-in-Council, the Ogun State Muslim Council, the family of the late monarch, and the people of Ijebuland.

He also prayed for the repose of the late monarch’s soul: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and admit him to Al-Jannah Firdaus. Ameen.”

Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in April 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers and a respected figure in both traditional and religious spheres. His passing comes as Nigeria mourns the loss of another statesman, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who also died on Sunday.
