In continuation of the seven-day national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has announced Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The announcement was made in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Interior and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, declared the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, following President Tinubu’s approval.
The holiday, the statement noted, is to pay tribute to the former president’s lifetime of service, dedication to national unity, and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.
He urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion in line with his vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
The Federal Government also reiterated that national flags across the country and at Nigerian missions abroad will continue to fly at half-mast for the duration of the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The government extended its condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
