Nigeria has lost another towering figure, as the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed on.
The highly revered monarch died on Sunday, just hours after the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari, was officially announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Oba Adetona, who was 91 years old, ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, making him one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in Nigeria’s history. His reign spanned over six decades, during which he was widely acknowledged for his wisdom, courage, and influential voice on national and Yoruba affairs.
Though details surrounding his passing remain sketchy, sources close to the palace confirmed the development. Official statements from the Ijebu Palace and the Ogun State government are expected in the coming hours.
