Ibadanland has been thrown into mourning as the Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I, has passed on, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.

The revered monarch, who ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland in July 2024, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief but impactful reign lasting exactly one year.
Oba Olakulehin was born on July 5, 1935, and was presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024. His enthronement was widely celebrated as a symbol of stability and continuity in the traditional leadership of Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital city.
The monarch’s sudden demise, coming so closely after his milestone birthday, has left many in shock, especially within the traditional and political circles of the state.
His tenure, though brief, was marked by efforts to promote peace, unity, and cultural pride within Ibadanland. Tributes have already begun pouring in from chiefs, political leaders, and citizens who admired his calm leadership and commitment to preserving Ibadan’s heritage.
Funeral rites are expected to be announced by the Ibadan Traditional Council in the coming days.
