The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Dalori, as its Acting National Chairman following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, stepped down from the party’s top position on Friday, citing the need to focus on his health. His resignation came amid mounting internal criticism and concerns over the party’s zoning principles, as his appointment in August 2023 had drawn opposition from members who argued it disrupted APC’s internal balance, particularly between the North-West and North-Central zones.
Announcing the development, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed in a statement that President Bola Tinubu had directed Dalori to assume leadership in an acting capacity, pending an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to formally fill the vacant position.
Morka paid tribute to Ganduje’s contributions, describing his tenure as one marked by efforts to foster party unity, strengthen democratic ideals, and enhance the APC’s political competitiveness. He noted that Ganduje’s leadership had overseen successful defections into the party and had helped solidify the party’s leadership legitimacy through legal victories.
“Ganduje leaves his position with pride in our collective achievements,” Morka said, noting that the NEC and party caucus had previously affirmed confidence in Ganduje’s leadership during meetings held in February 2025.
He further assured party members and supporters that the APC remains committed to delivering on President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to providing transformative governance across the country.
Dalori’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the APC as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. The party’s NEC is expected to convene shortly to begin the process of selecting a substantive chairman.
