In a historic gesture of recognition, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the renaming of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of the late former governor of the old Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo. The institution will now be known as Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an interdenominational commendation service held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, in honour of the late elder statesman.
Governor Makinde described Dr. Olunloyo as an “academic colossus, technocrat, and visionary leader” whose foundational contributions to the institution and the state continue to inspire future generations.
Olunloyo, who served as the first rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, played a pivotal role in establishing the academic and administrative structures that helped shape the institution into a respected centre of learning in Nigeria.
“His legacy continues to inspire generations,” Makinde said. “The renaming of the polytechnic is a fitting tribute to his enduring impact. His leadership and vision for education left a lasting mark not only on the institution but on the state as a whole.”
The governor noted that Olunloyo’s commitment to academic excellence and public service laid the groundwork for the institution’s development and the wider advancement of education in the state.
The renaming marks a significant moment in the history of the polytechnic and reflects the state government’s commitment to preserving the legacies of those who have made lasting contributions to education and governance in Oyo State.
