PDP Resolves Leadership Rift, Reinstates Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a decisive step toward mending internal cracks by reinstating Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, signaling a major move to stabilize its leadership ahead of critical political engagements.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the party’s Acting National Chairman, during a press conference at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja. Damagum was joined by top party figures including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

According to Damagum, the decision to reinstate Anyanwu—widely considered a close political ally of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike—was not an easy one but was taken in the broader interest of party unity and organizational integrity.

“This is a critical decision,” Damagum said. “Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary. Like INEC rightly said, they don’t have our notice yet, so what will happen on June 30th is not a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, but rather an extended caucus gathering.”

The reinstatement follows a recent meeting between PDP leadership and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where concerns around party structure, internal democracy, and electoral compliance were discussed.

As part of the resolution process, the party also announced the cancellation of its previously scheduled NEC meeting. Damagum noted that the next round of decision-making would take place at an expanded caucus meeting, which will chart the course for a full NEC gathering at a later date.

The move to bring Anyanwu back into the National Working Committee (NWC) is seen by many observers as a strategic effort to reconcile divergent factions within the PDP and restore cohesion as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political analysts say the decision could help de-escalate tensions between party leaders in the South-East and other stakeholders, especially amid recent disagreements over appointments and zoning arrangements.

With this development, the PDP appears focused on consolidating its internal structure and avoiding the pitfalls that have plagued the party in recent years.
