Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, a former Governor of old Oyo State and elder statesman, has died. He passed away at exactly 1:40 a.m. in a private hospital after a brief illness, according to a close source to the family who confirmed the news.
Olunloyo, a distinguished academic and politician, held several pioneering positions in the country’s educational institutions. He was the first Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan and the Kwara State Polytechnic. He also held traditional titles as the Balogun of Oyo and the Otun Bobasewa of Ife.
A respected figure in Nigeria’s political and intellectual landscape, Dr. Olunloyo was elected as Governor of Oyo State under the platform of the now-defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN). He served from October 1, 1983, until December of the same year, when a military coup led by then Major General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari.
His long record of service to the nation and humanity, according to family and associates, remains a source of pride and enduring legacy.
