The political turmoil within the Lagos State House of Assembly appears to be reaching its climax as Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker on January 13, 2025, moves closer to reclaiming his position.
In a significant development, Obasa’s security details have been restored, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn. This shift signals a power transition in the Assembly, even as Meranda has yet to officially step down.
Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly following Obasa’s removal, now faces mounting pressure to vacate the seat. Over the weekend, key figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and some lawmakers, convened to resolve the crisis.
At the meeting, a consensus was reportedly reached in favor of Obasa’s return, effectively sealing Meranda’s fate. With these developments, all indications point to Obasa reclaiming the Speakership, reinforcing his political influence within the state’s legislative framework.
