The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of three individuals, including Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, over their alleged involvement in a tragic stampede during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The incident, which occurred last week, resulted in the deaths of 35 children and injuries to six others. Also remanded were Oriyomi Hamzat, CEO of Agidigbo FM, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School.

Presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi, the court issued the remand order after the suspects were arraigned amidst tight security. They face a four-count charge tied to the stampede, with the prosecution citing violations of Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The prosecution claimed that the defendants’ actions contributed to the tragedy that marred the festive celebration. Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi directed their remand at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending advice from the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.

The high-profile case attracted public attention, with the suspects heavily guarded by security operatives during their court appearance.
