The Federal Government announced on Monday that it has begun distributing an additional 10 trucks of 50kg rice bags to every state. The rice is being sold at designated locations for N40,000 per bag.
During a Council meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that this initiative is aimed at alleviating poverty and addressing the rising cost of living. He emphasized that the government is responding to the concerns raised by citizens, including those voiced in recent protests.
Idris explained, “The FEC believes that the government’s actions are addressing the majority of the demands made by the protesters. As a listening government, we believe there is no need for further protests, as we are already taking steps to meet the people’s needs.”
The minister highlighted that, alongside the distribution of rice, the government is offering it at a reduced price of N40,000 per bag—approximately 50% of its market value. The rice is available at various centers across all states, allowing those in need to purchase it affordably.
“This initial provision of 10 trucks per state is just the beginning,” Idris continued. “While we understand that these efforts may not be enough, they are necessary first steps. Additional interventions are being planned to support the most vulnerable in our society.”
