As preparations for the upcoming protest on August 1 intensify, security stakeholders in Oyo State have emphasized the need for a peaceful and orderly demonstration, warning against any form of vandalism, theft, or burglary. The appeal was made during a security meeting on Thursday at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.
CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd), Special Adviser on Security to the Oyo State Governor, convened the meeting to discuss the protest and engage with various interest groups. He stressed that while the state government upholds the right to peaceful protest, it will not tolerate any violence or disruptions.
“We are committed to ensuring that all citizens can exercise their rights peacefully,” Owoseni said. “We urge everyone to avoid property damage, theft, and any criminal acts that could disturb the state’s peace.”
Owoseni highlighted that this proactive approach is part of ongoing efforts to address gaps identified in previous protests, such as #EndSARS. The meeting focused on how to prepare for the upcoming protest while ensuring public order and allowing businesses to operate smoothly.
“The aim is to prepare for the protest and safeguard public order. Our goal is to allow businesses and daily activities to continue without hindrance,” Owoseni explained. He noted that security agencies have been equipped with the necessary tools to maintain peace and address any potential threats.
Local market leaders, transport union representatives, and local government officials were among the attendees. They were tasked with disseminating the message of peaceful protest within their communities and preventing any unlawful activities.
The meeting also addressed concerns about potential disruptions. Market representatives have established task forces to collaborate with security agencies and prevent any criminal activities. This ongoing engagement aims to ensure that the protest remains peaceful and does not disrupt daily life.
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Sonubi Ayodele, represented by Deputy Commissioner Akin Adejobi, assured protesters of maximum protection, provided the demonstration remains peaceful. He urged various groups to be vigilant about potential hoodlums who might attempt to hijack the protest for illegal activities.
Mr. Tajudeen Adeogun (fsi), Director of the Department of State Security, advised youths and students to avoid being used for unlawful activities. He emphasized that the protest should not compromise public safety or order.
Additionally, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd); Commandant of the Oyo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun), Col. Olayinka Olayanju (rtd); and Babaloja-General of Oyo State, Alhaji Y.K. Abass, all appealed to protesters to act in the best interest of Oyo State and avoid actions that could lead to violence or disorder.
The meeting was attended by heads of security agencies and representatives of service commanders in the state, reflecting a unified commitment to maintaining peace during the upcoming protest.
