OPay Dismisses September 1 Shutdown Rumour, Assures Customers of Continued Operations

OPay Digital Services Limited has moved to dispel a viral message claiming that the fintech company would suspend its operations from September 1, 2026, urging customers to withdraw or transfer their funds.

The message, which circulated widely across social media and messaging platforms, was presented as an “Official Note” from OPay Digital Services Limited. It claimed that the company would embark on a “long indefinite break” beginning September 1 and would stop processing transactions and attending to account-related services until further notice.

The purported notice also advised customers to remove their funds from their OPay accounts “as soon as possible” to avoid inconvenience, triggering concern among some users.

OPay, however, rejected the publication, describing it as false, malicious and misleading.

In a response shared through its verified communication channels, the fintech company said: “This is FALSE. OPay is not going on break by September. We’re here, and we’re going nowhere!

The company urged customers and members of the public to examine the viral message carefully, noting that inconsistencies and other warning signs could be identified in the purported announcement.

“True OPay users know how to identify our official communications. Take a closer look at the viral post and you’ll spot the red flags,” the company stated.

It further advised users to verify information before sharing it and to depend on OPay’s authenticated platforms for genuine updates.

“Always verify before you share. Filter the noise! Follow our official pages for authentic OPay updates,” the company added, using the hashtag #OPayIsOkay.

Also reacting to the development, OPay’s Vice-President, Public and Government Affairs, Dr. Maxwell Loko, described the viral publication as “false, malicious and misleading.”

According to Loko, OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be persuaded to withdraw their funds based on fabricated information.

“This post is false, malicious and misleading. OPay is not shutting down, and customers should not be misled into withdrawing their funds based on fabricated information,” he said.

Loko urged members of the public to disregard the publication and rely exclusively on OPay’s verified communication channels for information about the company.

He also warned that deliberately spreading false information capable of creating panic or undermining confidence in a financial institution could have legal consequences.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about the spread of fabricated financial information online, particularly messages urging customers to immediately move or withdraw their money.

OPay consequently advised customers to exercise caution whenever they encounter claims about its operations and to authenticate such information through the company’s official channels before taking any financial action.

The fintech company’s clarification effectively puts to rest the claim that it would cease or suspend operations from September 1, with OPay reaffirming that its services remain available to customers.

The development follows reports that OPay recorded a significant financial turnaround in its 2025 financial year, swinging to a $72.47 million net profit from a $50.98 million loss in 2024, while revenue rose 161 per cent to $536.25 million.
