The Oyo State Fire Services Agency successfully prevented what could have become a major inferno after a fire broke out at Onipasan in the Araromi Market area of Gate, Ibadan, late Saturday night.
The agency received a distress call about the incident at approximately 11:05 p.m. from a caller identified as Mr. Ayobami.
A firefighting team led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adesina was immediately deployed to the scene, where the personnel discovered that disused tyres and spare parts were already engulfed in flames, posing a serious threat to surrounding shops and other nearby properties.
The firefighters promptly commenced operations to contain the blaze and subsequently requested reinforcement from the Fire Service Headquarters. An additional fire truck was deployed to support the operation.
Through the coordinated efforts of the firefighters, the flames were successfully brought under control and extinguished before they could spread to nearby shops and other properties.
No casualty was recorded in the incident.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was suspected to have resulted from unattended burning of electrical cables, allegedly carried out in an attempt to recover copper wires.
The firefighters concluded the operation and returned safely to their station at about 1:21 a.m. on Sunday, while remaining on operational standby.
