The National Population Commission (NPC) has been thrown into mourning following the death of its Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, barely eight months after he assumed office.
Wushishi reportedly died on Friday, August 28, 2026, after a brief illness, with news of his death spreading to Minna, the Niger State capital, around the time of the Juma’at prayer.
His passing has thrown his associates, political allies and other members of the public into mourning.
The deceased, who was a former Secretary of the Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had reportedly taken ill shortly before his death.
Confirming the development, his Special Adviser on Media, Stanley Nwosu, said the NPC chairman had died after a brief illness.
“Yes, it is true. The NPC chairman died after a brief illness,” Nwosu said.
Wushishi was appointed to head the National Population Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and officially assumed office in December 2025, taking charge of the federal agency responsible for population data, census-related matters and civil registration.
His death came about eight months into his tenure as chairman of the commission, which plays a crucial role in generating demographic information used for national planning and development.
Reports also indicated that Wushishi had a strong background in public service and politics before his appointment to lead the commission.
At the time of filing this report, further details surrounding the circumstances of his death and arrangements for his funeral were still being awaited.
The NPC has since announced that Dr Aminu Yusuf, popularly known as Talban Wushishi, died in Abuja on Friday after a brief illness, at the age of 66.
