“There Should Be a Limit to Ambition” — A Timeless Lesson from Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s Superiority Album (1985)  By Laide Olawumi

One of the defining hallmarks of the late Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister was his extraordinary gift for weaving profound life lessons into the fabric of melody.
His compositions transcended mere entertainment; they were masterclasses in philosophy—instructive, enduring, and deeply reflective of the human condition.

A stellar example of this musical genius is found in his classic 1985 album, Superiority, where Barrister famously sang:

“Ẹṣin tó ṣíwájú gba first náà o…
Èyí tó gba second, kó máa mura o…
    Ìyá yìí á pọ̀ lápòjù, a fẹ́ bá tìwájú,
    Bẹ́ẹ̀ ni t’ẹ́yìn náà, ò gbọ́dọ̀ bà á o…”

    Translated simply, Barrister was advising:

“The horse in the lead takes the first position. The one in second place must continue to prepare itself. The struggle will always be intense because everyone strives to overtake the leader, but those behind must not allow destructive desperation to consume them.”

This stands as one of the most profound philosophies ever articulated in Fuji music history.

The Balance Between Drive and Destiny
    —————————————————————-
Life, by all accounts, resembles a race. Yet, it is a race where human effort alone does not guarantee victory. In Barrister’s worldview, promotion and honour are ultimately governed by divine timing. While human beings must strive, it is God who elevates individuals according to His supreme wisdom.

    -Ambition is healthy.
    -Hard work is commendable.
    -Aspiration is necessary.

But there must be a definitive limit to ambition.

When ambition morphs from a desire for self-improvement into an unhealthy obsession with dethroning another person, it becomes toxic. A person trapped in this mindset stops celebrating their own milestones, choosing instead to measure their worth solely through the lens of aggressive comparison.

The Reality of the “Number 2” Spot
    ———————————————————-
To fully appreciate the gravity of Barrister’s message, one must look at the historical context of the Fuji landscape when Superiority was released in 1985.

At the time, the undisputed, supposed “Number 2” of Fuji music was General Kollington Ayinla.
The fierce, decades-long rivalry between Barrister and Kollington was the lifeblood of the genre. Barrister’s musical sermon was a direct, fraternal warning to his contemporaries to be content with his second-place standing, continue perfecting his craft, and avoid the corrosive anxiety of trying to forcefully displace the pioneer.

Regrettably, history shows that Kollington did not heed this timeless advice. Rather than anchoring himself in his own legacy, he remained entangled in endless supremacy battles—and in the end, lost that coveted second spot entirely.

A Living Example in Fuji History
    —————————————————
The evolution of Fuji music itself perfectly illustrates this principle of unfolding destiny and the danger of unchecked ambition.

In 2006, Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister made history as the first Fuji musician to receive a Nigerian National Honour, being conferred with the prestigious Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Sixteen years later, in 2022, it was not Kollington Ayinla who stepped up to claim the next national mantle.
Instead, Barrister’s prominent protege and mentee, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 the Ultimate), catapulted past the old guard.
He was officially honoured by the Federal Government with the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), effectively sealing his place as the definitive Number 2 on the national honours list.

These historic moments prove that recognition arrives in different forms and at different seasons. Each accolade stands firmly on its own merit, reflecting the recipient’s unique contributions to the cultural landscape of the nation.

    The Enduring Legacy
    ———————————-
This is precisely why Barrister’s sermon on superiority remains so intensely relevant today. It calls on us to pursue excellence relentlessly, while remaining anchored in the peace that comes with trusting God’s timeline.

Rather than burning up energy in the furnace of envy and comparison, true wisdom lies in focusing on one’s unique path and allowing history to validate our efforts naturally.

More than four decades after Superiority hit the airwaves, its core truth still echoes clearly: Work hard. Prepare diligently. Celebrate excellence. Respect the trailblazers. Trust the timing of your life.

That is the enduring legacy of Alhaji Agba—a philosophy for the ages, delivered through the timeless vessel of Fuji music.
