The Nigerian entertainment landscape has been thrown into mourning following the sudden passing of veteran Juju and Highlife singer, Iyun Janet Oluwatoyosi Ajilore, popularly known as “Saint Janet” or “Mama Yabis.”
The energetic performer, renowned for her unfiltered party tracks, satirical humor, and distinctive live stage presence, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after a brief illness.
The news of her demise was formally confirmed on Sunday morning by media publisher and socialite, Otunba Femi Davies, via his social media channels.
In a tribute announcing her passing, Davies wrote:
“St Janet (Iyun Janet Ajilore), a popular Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician known for her vibrant live performances, energetic stage presence and socially unfiltered party tracks, is dead. She died after a brief illness on Saturday.”
A Career Built on Boldness and Cultural Wit
Fondly dubbed the “General Overseer of Sinners’ Chapel” and “Mama Yabis” by fans, Saint Janet carved out a unique, controversial, and highly sought-after niche within the South-West party scene (Owanbe).
Her national breakthrough came with her wildly successful yet controversial album, Faaji Plus. Known for her raw, unfiltered, and sexually suggestive lyrics, her tracks frequently triggered intense public debate and regulatory scrutiny, drawing sanctions and bans from broadcasting monitoring groups, musical associations like PMAN, and state authorities.
Despite the controversy, Saint Janet maintained a massive and loyal fanbase. Her ability to seamlessly blend traditional Juju rhythms with Highlife, sharp social commentary, and humor made her a staple headline act at major social celebrations, executive clubs, and private parties across Nigeria and abroad.
Tributes Pour In
News of her death has sent shockwaves through the creative industry, with fans, event promoters, and music colleagues expressing disbelief and paying tribute to her artistic bravery.
Many industry commentators have praised her for breaking traditional gender molds within the male-dominated Juju music genre, carving out an unshakeable identity through sheer talent, stage flair, and raw performance energy.
As of press time, her family has not released formal details regarding funeral arrangements.
