Oriire Abduction: Senate Approves ₦50m Support for Families of Slain Teachers, Security Personnel

The Nigerian Senate has announced a ₦50 million support package for the families of two teachers and three security personnel who lost their lives during the Oriire school abduction crisis in Oyo State.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the intervention during plenary on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, describing it as a gesture of national gratitude and solidarity with the bereaved families following the 56-day ordeal.

Under the arrangement, the ₦50 million package will be shared equally among the five affected families, with each receiving ₦10 million.

The families of the two teachers killed by the kidnappers during captivity, including mathematics teacher Mr Michael Oyedokun, will receive a combined ₦20 million, while ₦30 million will go to the families of three security personnel who died during the tactical rescue operation.

The fallen security personnel identified by the Senate are Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army; Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army; and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We must recognise those who paid the ultimate price to secure the freedom of our children. This ₦50 million is a token of our nation’s deepest respect, and we pray that it provides some measure of relief to the families these brave men and women left behind,” Akpabio said.

While the announcement received widespread approval from lawmakers, it also triggered debate over the need for a broader and more structured national policy on compensation for victims of insecurity.

Raising a point of order during plenary, Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, urged the Senate leadership to ensure that compensation policies for victims of national security crises are holistic, institutionalised and fully inclusive.

Ningi cautioned against what he described as “selective compensation,” arguing that while honouring fallen security personnel and teachers was highly commendable, every Nigerian who suffers direct losses, injuries or death as a result of banditry and terrorist attacks deserves equal consideration and institutionalised state support.

He warned that the absence of structured and uniform guidelines for compensating victims of insecurity could create unintended perceptions of discrimination.

The Senate’s debate on the Oriire rescue operation, which culminated last Friday in the safe return of 46 surviving pupils and teachers, also led to the adoption of several resolutions.

Following a motion presented by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the upper chamber commended President Bola Tinubu as well as the joint military, police and intelligence forces for their persistence throughout the gruelling operation, which involved more than 50 days of tracking efforts.

The Senate, however, demanded a comprehensive audit of all security funds allocated to defence agencies amid continuing security threats across the country.

The upper chamber also called on the Federal Government to ensure the immediate and prompt payment of all statutory death benefits, insurance claims and pensions due to the families of fallen security personnel.

It further demanded an expansion of the Safe Schools Initiative through improved structural surveillance, intelligence coordination and security deployment around vulnerable rural schools and communities across Nigeria to prevent future abductions.

The Senate also urged security forces to sustain military offensives against criminal groups and build on the momentum of the successful Oriire rescue operation by neutralising active kidnappers’ dens operating in forest reserves across the country.
