The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced the former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate, pairing him with former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, for the 2027 presidential election.
Revealing the high-stakes decision in an official statement on Monday, June 15, 2026, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the joint Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic “unity and rescue ticket” specifically designed to address Nigeria’s multiplying economic and security challenges.
According to the party’s leadership, Amaechi’s selection followed exhaustive, nationwide consultations with key party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives spanning all six geopolitical zones. The choice directly reflects his strong performance during the newly concluded ADC presidential primary election, in which Amaechi finished as the first runner-up, securing 504,117 votes behind Atiku Abubakar, who clinched the sole presidential ticket with 1,846,370 votes.
Mallam Abdullahi emphasised that the final pairing brings together two of the most tested statesmen of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. He noted that the joint ticket provides a rare blend of national reach, administrative depth, and the specific leadership capacity required to navigate Nigeria out of its current fiscal and structural difficulties.
Reacting to the announcement, the ADC Media Alliance (AMA) released a comprehensive solidarity dispatch welcoming Amaechi’s emergence and congratulating the newly formed ticket. The alliance noted that Amaechi remains one of the most balanced and accomplished political leaders in modern Nigerian history, possessing extensive public service records that bridge both the legislative and executive arms of government.
The media alliance meticulously outlined Amaechi’s deep administrative background to back their endorsement, highlighting his tenures as:
- The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
- A Two-Term Governor of Rivers State.
- The Chairman of the influential Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF).
- The Federal Minister of Transportation, where he famously spearheaded the modernization of Nigeria’s national rail infrastructure.
- A Two-Time Director-General of the Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Campaign Council.
“Throughout these high-profile national assignments, Rt. Hon. Amaechi has consistently demonstrated immense courage, sharp administrative capacity, and an unyielding commitment to national development,” the AMA statement reads. “His reputation as a reform-minded administrator and his proven ability to build stable coalitions across deep ethnic, political, and regional lines make him uniquely positioned to complement the candidacy of Atiku Abubakar.”
The ADC Media Alliance maintained that the combination of Atiku Abubakar’s renowned economic management background and Amaechi’s aggressive infrastructural execution record forms one of the most formidable political partnerships available to the Nigerian electorate.
The group stated that the alliance offers a compelling, practical alternative at a time when ordinary citizens are actively demanding structural solutions to hyperinflation, mass unemployment, widespread insecurity, and a declining level of public trust in core government institutions.
“This historic partnership will further energize the growing, nationwide coalition of citizens seeking positive, democratic change,” the AMA statement concluded, expressing absolute confidence that the party is now fully positioned to mount an aggressive, nationwide campaign to earn the mandate of Nigerians across every federal constituency in 2027.
