The Oyo State Government has formally elevated three Ibadan High Chiefs, including a serving senator, to the status of crown-wearing Obas, conducting their coronation and presentation of Staff of Office in absentia at Mapo Hall on Friday, April 3, 2026.
The ceremony, held in Ibadan, marked a significant development in the evolution of the traditional institution in Ibadanland, as the state proceeded with the rites despite the physical absence of the beneficiaries.
The newly elevated monarchs include Oba Sarafadeen Abiodun Alli, who is also a serving Senator of the Federal Republic; Oba Oyekola Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria; and Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin.
The event underscored the calibre of individuals within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy, as the trio transitioned from High Chiefs to Royal Highnesses.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal, performed the official presentation of the Staff of Office, thereby completing the legal and traditional processes required for their elevation.
The ceremony maintained a festive yet dignified atmosphere, attracting dignitaries from across the country who gathered to witness what has been described as a historic moment in the restructuring of the Olubadan-in-Council system.
The decision to proceed with the coronation in absentia followed an earlier request by the affected High Chiefs for a postponement, as communicated by the Olubadan’s palace. However, by going ahead with the presentation, the current administration reaffirmed its statutory authority over chieftaincy matters and ongoing reforms within the traditional institution.
Although the newly elevated Obas were not physically present to receive their instruments of office, the completion of the rites formally confirms their new status and ensures continuity in the traditional leadership structure of Ibadanland.
The development represents a defining moment in the history of the ancient city, reinforcing both administrative reforms and the functionality of the expanded monarchy system.
