The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has dismissed reports of a strained relationship between the palace and the Oyo State Government, clarifying circumstances surrounding the postponement of a scheduled coronation ceremony.
In a statement issued through his Media Aide, Adeola Oloko, the monarch refuted speculations suggesting a rift between him and the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, whom he described as the “Olori Omo Oba of Ibadanland.” The palace maintained that the reports were unfounded and reaffirmed that cordial relations between the traditional institution and the state executive remain intact.
Addressing claims linked to the postponed coronation earlier scheduled for Friday, April 3, 2026, the palace also debunked rumours that the Olubadan had travelled out of the state to avoid the ceremony. It clarified that the monarch is hale and hearty in Ibadan and continues to carry out his official duties, stressing that he is neither in self-exile nor evading any state function.
Providing insight into the reason for the postponement, the palace explained that the three High Chiefs slated for coronation had formally notified the Olubadan of their inability to attend the ceremony on the proposed date. Consequently, they requested that the event be rescheduled.
According to the statement, this development has been duly communicated to the Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
The Olubadan further called on members of the public and the media to disregard the circulating reports of discord, noting that all processes relating to chieftaincy matters are being handled with mutual respect and cooperation between the palace and the government.
The clarification is expected to ease tensions and put to rest speculations surrounding the relationship between the state government and the traditional leadership in Ibadan.
