The Benue State Police Command has arrested two serving police sergeants in connection with an alleged armed robbery operation, leading to the recovery of a stolen vehicle and firearms.
The arrest followed an operation by the command’s surveillance patrol team, which acted on credible intelligence about a red Toyota Corolla, 2010 model, with registration number NEG-35-AE, earlier reported to have been stolen at gunpoint in Akwanga and allegedly heading towards Keffi.
Police sources said the suspects, who were driving the stolen vehicle, breached a police checkpoint at Angwan Lambu in an attempt to evade arrest. However, operatives trailed the vehicle and later intercepted it at a military checkpoint near Uke, where the suspects were apprehended.
Items recovered from the suspects at the point of arrest included one AK-47 rifle, three magazines loaded with 16 rounds of live ammunition, one black face mask, three mobile phones and other personal belongings.
The arrested suspects were identified as Sergeant Shedrack Abednego of the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, and Sergeant John Ayuba of the Commissioner of Police Crack Squad, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command.
Sources at the command disclosed that investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ involvement and to determine whether they have links to other criminal activities.
