Fresh political tension erupted in Rivers State on Thursday as the State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The move was made during a plenary session chaired by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, where the Majority Leader, Major Jack, officially read a notice of allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Governor Fubara.
The notice, endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly, accused the governor of actions said to be contrary to provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. Following the reading, Speaker Amaewhule disclosed that the notice would be formally served on the governor within the next seven days.
In the same sitting, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, also read out a separate notice containing allegations and claims of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Oduh, signaling the extension of the impeachment process to both occupants of the state’s top executive offices.
