President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on state governors to fully comply with the Supreme Court ruling mandating direct funding for local governments, insisting that effective local government autonomy cannot exist without strict adherence to the law.

The President made this known while addressing an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting, where he emphasized that local government autonomy must go beyond rhetoric and be implemented in practical terms.
According to Tinubu, there is no autonomy if local governments are not given their funds directly, as provided for by the Supreme Court. He stressed that compliance with the ruling is essential to strengthening grassroots governance and ensuring that local councils can function independently and efficiently.

Tinubu urged governors to implement local government autonomy in their respective states by releasing statutory allocations directly to local governments, in line with the Supreme Court’s mandate.

The President’s call underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and development at the grassroots level through effective local government administration.
