Newly elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Akeem Abas, has begun his tenure with a strong message of reconciliation, reaching out directly to his two opponents from Tuesday’s election in a bid to strengthen unity within the union.
Shortly after emerging victorious under the Great Minds Team, Abas placed personal phone calls to both Raji Adebayo of the Divine Mandate Team and Olusola Oladapo of the Consolidation Team. The gesture, seen by many as a significant move toward healing post-election divisions, underscored his intention to run an inclusive administration.
According to a statement issued by the Council’s Secretary, Dayo Adu, Abas assured his opponents that the development of the union requires collaboration across all blocs, stressing that the competitive nature of the polls should not translate into lasting division.
He reaffirmed that the victory belongs to the entire Oyo NUJ family, not just his team, and pledged to work closely with every stakeholder to advance the interests of the council.
Abas further emphasised that personal ambitions must not stand in the way of unity and progress. He urged all contestants and members to prioritise the union’s overall welfare, put aside any lingering grievances, and embrace a collective approach to building peace, professionalism, and growth within the Oyo NUJ.
