Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, has applauded the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, for conducting what he described as a free, fair, and credible election that reflects the union’s commitment to democratic ideals.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Oyelade congratulated the newly elected Chairman, Mr. Akeem Abas, along with other winners in the poll held at the Oyo State Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan. He said the outcome of the exercise represents “a proud moment for the Oyo NUJ,” noting that the transparency of the election had strengthened internal democracy within the union and set a standard for other councils across the federation.
“It has also allowed professionalism to fester,” the commissioner added.
Oyelade, who served as Vice Chairman of the union 40 years ago, expressed the state government’s delight at the seamless conduct of the poll and praised the outgoing chairman and his executive for ensuring a smooth and exemplary transition. He described their performance as “outstanding” and worthy of commendation.
“You have made history today,” Oyelade stated. “By conducting a transparent election, you have set an example worthy of emulation.”
He urged Abas and his newly inaugurated team to focus on promoting good governance within the union and contributing meaningfully to the progress of the Oyo NUJ and Nigeria at large. The commissioner also commended the other contestants for accepting the results graciously, describing them as true democrats whose maturity further enhanced the integrity of the election.
Oyelade wished all participants well and encouraged the aspirants who did not win to look ahead to greater opportunities in the future.
