Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s long-anticipated political move became reality on Monday as he formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift within Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His registration followed an earlier weekend announcement to ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa, where he signalled plans to take on a more structured role within the coalition party. The development was later confirmed in a statement by his aide, Abdul Rasheeth, obtained by PUNCH Online.
Videos and photos from the event captured the excitement that greeted Atiku’s arrival. His convoy was met by crowds of enthusiastic supporters who beat drums, sang, and waved placards bearing his image. Atiku acknowledged them with smiles and waves from his vehicle before receiving his ADC membership card.
Shortly after completing the process, Atiku posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing briefly: “It’s official. -AA”.
With Monday’s registration, the former vice president solidifies his association with the ADC — a coalition he had endorsed in July as a common platform for opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Until now, Atiku and other leading opposition figures had delayed formal membership.
His formal entry into the ADC is expected to elevate the party’s profile and further unify the opposition ahead of the next general election.
