Sixteen PCMs Lost in Fatal Crash, Survivors in Critical Condition Amid NYSC Safety Concerns

A tragic road accident involving Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) travelling to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Gombe State has deepened nationwide worries over the risks associated with long-distance NYSC deployments. Sixteen young graduates died in the crash, while two others survived but remained in critical condition at a hospital.

All the victims were graduates of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) in Ondo State. They were travelling in an 18-seater bus when the accident occurred. Eyewitnesses described the crash as catastrophic, noting that even the two survivors were left with severe, life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders recovered the bodies and transported the injured to a nearby medical facility.

As of press time, the NYSC Management had not released an official statement. However, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other authorities had begun investigations to determine the cause of the crash.

The incident has reignited widespread debate over road safety and the vulnerability of young graduates mobilised to distant places of primary assignment. Across social media and within university communities, there have been growing calls for stricter travel safety protocols and better oversight of vehicles transporting prospective corps members. Some Nigerians have also urged a broader review of the NYSC mobilisation system, insisting that deployment procedures should prioritise reducing long, high-risk journeys for PCMs.
