The Oyo State Government has approved a series of multi-billion-naira infrastructural projects aimed at expanding road networks, improving power supply, upgrading educational facilities and boosting security across the state.

This followed the resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting, where the reconstruction of key roads in Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa zones and other critical development projects were ratified.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Council approved the reconstruction of the 30-kilometre Igboho–Kishi Road in Oke-Ogun at a cost of ₦38,689,548,227.66. Similarly, the 39-kilometre Ido–Akufo Junction–Eruwa Road in the Ibarapa axis will be reconstructed at a cost of ₦50,344,692,765.50.

Oyelade stated that the approvals form part of the government’s commitment to linking all six geo-political zones of the state with durable and accessible road networks.

On energy, the Council approved the construction, installation, distribution, operation, and maintenance of a 12MW Ibadan Independent Gas Power Plant at a cost of ₦27,338,650,000. The plant is expected to provide uninterrupted electricity to critical government facilities including the State Secretariat, Government House, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), High Courts, State Hospitals, and Lekan Salami Stadium, among others.

Following the completion of high-mast floodlight installations earlier approved, the Council also awarded a fresh contract for a hybrid power system worth ₦8,967,895,436.26 to extend the project to strategic areas within Ibadan metropolis.

On education, the Council approved the release of ₦3,554,642,584 as counterpart funding to enable the disbursement of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grant for the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Project. It also approved the remodelling and reconstruction of the long-abandoned library building behind the Government House, which has been unused for about 25 years, at a cost of ₦3,787,371,025.

Additionally, the sum of ₦221,021,000 was approved for the conduct of second and third term unified examinations for public primary schools across the state.

Other approvals include the construction of a new office complex for the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) at a cost of ₦1,334,603,000, and the development of a permanent site for the Nigeria Mobile Police Squadron in Ago-Are, Oke-Ogun Zone, at a cost of ₦5,858,061,682.31.

The statement recalled that the state had earlier requested the establishment of the Mobile Police Squadron to strengthen security and curb banditry in Oke-Ogun.
