A newly commissioned army officer, Lieutenant Dr Samson Haruna, has died after being set ablaze by his wife, Mrs Samson Haruna, following a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The tragic incident occurred on September 22, 2025, after the couple reportedly had a heated argument over the wife’s suspicion that her husband was involved in an extramarital affair. The confrontation escalated when Mrs Haruna allegedly poured petrol on her husband and set him on fire.
Lieutenant Dr Haruna, a native of Jos, Plateau State, was first rushed to the military clinic attached to the barracks before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Before joining the Nigerian Army, the deceased had graduated as a medical doctor and was commissioned into the military in 2024. He got married to his wife in April 2025, barely five months before the fatal incident.

Mrs Haruna, who is a nurse, has been arrested and is currently in police custody awaiting prosecution.
