Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has declared his readiness to step down from the 2027 presidential race if a younger, vibrant, and widely acceptable candidate emerges as the flagbearer of his political party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku made this known in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
The former Vice President explained that his participation in the 2027 contest would not hinder others, particularly young people, from vying for the presidency. He encouraged youths to join the race, stressing that he is prepared to give them maximum political support and guidance to secure victory.
Atiku dismissed suggestions that he is desperate to become Nigeria’s president, clarifying that his motivation is not personal ambition but a determination to rescue the country from individuals who, according to him, have continued to hold the nation “hostage.”
He maintained that his political aspiration is rooted in the pursuit of Nigeria’s recovery, noting that he is open to stepping aside if a candidate with the right qualities emerges to carry the party’s presidential mandate in 2027.
