The Dangote Refinery has announced that its long-awaited free fuel distribution programme will commence on Monday, September 15, beginning with selected states across the country.
In a statement issued by the company’s spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, the scheme will kick off in Lagos and other South-West states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo.
Chiejina confirmed that the initiative will come with a reduction in pump prices. Petrol will now sell for ₦841 per litre in Lagos and the South West, while Abuja, Edo, Kwara, Rivers, and Delta States will see a price adjustment to ₦851 per litre.
“We are starting the free fuel distribution scheme on Monday. We will start with Lagos and the South West, Abuja, Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo States. There will be a drop in price effective on Monday when the free distribution starts,” the statement read.
The programme, which was initially slated for August, faced delays due to logistics challenges in China. However, Dangote confirmed that more than 1,000 trucks have already been received to facilitate the roll-out, with more states set to benefit as additional trucks arrive in the country.
As part of efforts to strengthen fuel distribution and reduce costs, the refinery also disclosed its deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks. The company noted that despite a recent spike in CNG prices—reportedly doubling within the last week—it remains committed to rolling out 10,000 CNG trucks this year.
Dangote explained that the combined measures are designed to ease the economic burden on Nigerians while ensuring greater stability in the nation’s fuel supply chain.
