Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 81. He died at 5:01 p.m. on Saturday in a hospital in London, United Kingdom.

A statement confirming his death was issued by his former media aide, Garba Shehu, on behalf of the family.

The brief announcement reads:

“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN.
The family of the former president has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari, who was born on December 17, 1942, first came to national prominence as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985, following a coup that overthrew the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari. He later returned to power as a democratically elected president in 2015, serving two consecutive terms until 2023.

Widely regarded as a disciplinarian and a proponent of anti-corruption, Buhari’s administration was marked by efforts to reform the economy, combat insurgency, and reposition Nigeria on the global stage—although it also faced criticism for rising insecurity and economic hardship.

He spent the latter part of his life mostly away from public view, and reports of his frequent travels to the UK for medical reasons had long been a topic of public discourse.

The family has requested prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected in the coming hours.
