In a strategic move that underscores Nigeria’s shifting political landscape, state-level leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have resigned to allow the party to become the official platform of the newly formed opposition coalition targeting the 2027 elections.
Outgoing ADC National Chairman Ralph O. Nwosu announced the changes on Wednesday, describing them as part of a broader transition aimed at consolidating opposition forces. Senator David Mark, former Senate President, has been appointed interim National Chairman, while former Governor Rauf Aregbesola takes over as National Secretary.
This leadership overhaul coincided with the formal unveiling of the ADC as the coalition’s vehicle at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Prominent figures in attendance included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other political heavyweights such as John Oyegun, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Abubakar Malami, Dino Melaye, Solomon Dalong, Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
The ADC’s wholehearted embrace by the coalition marks a sharp departure from earlier efforts to form a new party under the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), which had faced delays in securing INEC registration. The ADC’s existing infrastructure, nationwide presence, and legal readiness made it a pragmatic choice for the united opposition.
By stepping aside, ADC’s leadership has effectively dissolved the party’s previous identity in favour of a unified front. With Senator Mark and Aregbesola at the helm, the party’s renewed structure is now firmly aligned with the coalition’s agenda.
Analysts view the reshuffle as a clear sign that the opposition is intent on presenting a credible, consolidated alternative to the incumbent government—leveraging the ADC’s platform to advance their shared vision for governance reform and democratic renewal.
