Atiku Breaks Silence: ‘Our Battle Is Against Incompetence, Not Each Other’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to widespread inquiries regarding his stance on recent political developments, particularly the defection of some PDP members to the ruling party. In a strongly worded statement, Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, emphasizing that freedom of association and expression are non-negotiable rights.

He stated that while political realignments and defections are common in any democracy, they should not distract from the country’s deeper issues. “I bear no grudges against anyone for exercising their right to political alignment,” Atiku said, adding that democracy begins to crumble when the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability are undermined.

Atiku also addressed criticisms over his visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, calling out what he described as hypocrisy and selective outrage. He noted that past political leaders had visited former presidents as part of democratic consultations, and questioned why his visit to Buhari should now be considered controversial.

“When PDP leaders are busy brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, el-Rufai, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency,” he remarked.

The former vice president warned against being distracted by identity politics, stressing that the real battle is against the economic hardship and misgovernance under President Tinubu’s administration. “This is not APC versus PDP, or LP versus APC. It is Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the nation into untold suffering,” he declared.

He described the current government as one without achievements or a credible record to defend, claiming its only strategy is chaos and division. “An incompetent captain does not only wreck his ship; he endangers the lives of everyone on board,” Atiku concluded.
