Adeleke Dismisses Opposition Concerns, Affirms LG Elections Will Hold as Scheduled

Despite mounting opposition and legal concerns, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has reaffirmed that the local government elections will proceed as planned on Saturday. His declaration comes amid tensions between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has challenged the legitimacy of the polls.

In a statement issued Friday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke insisted that the elections would not be postponed, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to grassroots democracy.

The controversy surrounding the polls stems from a recent Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated APC-backed local government officials previously removed by the state government. The ruling has intensified the power struggle between the two parties, with the APC arguing that the officials’ tenure remains valid until October 2025.

Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi added to the dispute by warning Governor Adeleke against proceeding with the elections. He contended that holding a fresh election would violate the officials’ restored tenure and breach constitutional provisions, particularly in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy.

Despite these objections, Governor Adeleke remains resolute. While addressing civil society organizations in Osogbo, he assured the public that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) was fully prepared for the polls.

“Our people are eager to participate in the elections tomorrow. They are ready to choose their leaders at the grassroots level,” Adeleke stated, expressing confidence in OSSIEC’s preparations. He highlighted the participation of multiple political parties, reinforcing the credibility of the process.

Urging political actors to embrace democratic values and maintain peace, Adeleke emphasized that the elections would contribute to grassroots development. “The election will take place as scheduled, and I believe its outcome will drive grassroots development. I encourage our people to remain peaceful, as Osun is a state known for its stability,” he concluded.
